CCARP bemused by erroneous claims of environmental and health issues

“The Central Coast Artificial Reef Project (CCARP) is also amused by the farfetched claims that are currently being made by the Avoca protesters, these people need a reality check. Some of these claims are so over-the-top wrong that they are making Avoca residents look like fools” said Sue Dengate

“The concern of the PCBs that maybe left behind on The Adelaide is TOTALLY UNFOUNDED” said Dengate. “PCBs were found to be dangerous to health in the US in the 1970’s and their use was stopped with the exception of transformers and capacitors. Given that The Adelaide was build in the US with construction starting in 1978 and she was handed over to Australia on the 6th November 1980, this means that there were NO PCBs in ‘open systems’ when the Adelaide was built and locations of all ‘closed systems’ such as transformers and capacitors were logged on a PCB Register have been removed!” said Sue Dengate. “This is public knowledge and we are mystified as to why the leaders of the protesters are giving incorrect information to the Avoca residents” said Dengate, “especially when their own highly qualified and independent authority, Dr Peter Lewis (Area Director Public Health of North Sydney Central Coast), advised them that there was no health risk, that heavy metals had been phased out and little likelihood of impact on the food chain. Dr Lewis wrote to the protesters advising them of this BEFORE their rally at Avoca Beach, but they still used false and alarmist claims to frighten local Avoca residents into believing that the ship would be harmful. WHY?” said Dengate

Claims such as the one reported in the Sunday Herald that the vessel would move the tide-line 5 metres inshore are laughable. “Given that The Adelaide will be like Swiss cheese when sunk because of diver access holes and therefore having water through every cavity, the amount of water that is displaced will be minuscule. The Queen Mary 2 floating into Sydney Harbour last week displaced far more water and I didn’t see Circular Quay under water! The claim that the tide line will be affected is just silly and doesn’t do justice to the good thinking, intelligent people of Avoca” Said Sue Dengate

“The protesters keep clutching at straws by making wild and unfounded claims and we ‘blow them out of the water’ with fact, so they try another equally dim-witted claim for us to waste our time on. They are creating a ‘public mischief’ by fabricating stories and making alarmist claims without foundation” Dengate said. “They ignore the truth in order to propagate their own agenda and use the good people of Avoca to try to achieve their quest. What will these people conger up next” Said Sue Dengate. “Will these people try and disrupt the sinking in some way, thereby making the whole of the Central Coast look stupid?” said Dengate
