Press Releases

Wednesday 11th March 2010

The Central Coast Artificial Reef Project today released a highly qualified and independent medical report which has sunk the claims of some Avoca residents that there are public health concerns with the scuttling of the ex-HMAS Adelaide.

The report, prepared by Dr Peter Lewis, Area Director Public Health of Northern Sydney Central Coast Health, is dated Thursday 4 March 2010.

Dr Lewis commented that the technical aspects and legislative requirements for stripping prior to scuttling are considerable and “that any hazardous materials are removed.”

Sue Dengate, Secretary of CCARP then referred to the final part of the report which read, “From a public health perspective it is very difficult to mount a case of health risks arising from environmental contamination. Heavy metals have been phased out of paint products, discussion with a local marine scientist who has worked in this area confirm there is little likelihood of any impact on the food chain.”

“We would like to praise Dr Lewis for the thoroughness of his research and his report and hope that this will bring to an end the scuttle-butt that has been peddled as fact in respect of this environmentally clean project” Sue Dengate said.
